*Memorial to Ed Jones & Charles Butler from Beth Albaneze....

I first met my Recovery Coach Ed when he was taking my Group Dynamics class at Montgomery College.

Ed was continuing to get certified in his field and needed my class as a requirement. Ed was a ball of fire in class since he had so much life experience to share with other mental health students.

After Ed finished my class he and I met several times so he could pave the way for more career opportunity. I was starting my business House Calls where we serve teens to seniors needing home based services while facing acute and/or chronic life challenges.

Ed started marketing for me by attending meetings at the Caron Foundation for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, represented us at the Grass Root Organization for Senior Association meetings, National Alliance for Mental Illness meetings and Pain Management Association meetings. He would not hesitate to show up at a meeting in Montgomery County that started at 8am requiring him to drive a great distance from his home in traffic to demonstrate his commitment to House Calls and our mission.
When it came to our clients Ed’s role was as a Recovery Coach. Ed and I saw repeatedly how someone would get out of the hospital and only return due inadequate support services upon discharge. We decided he would, play a role in the home by making sure they were clean, taking urine tests, going to court or to a lawyers office, driving them to recovery meetings and facilitating interventions with the families when required.

Ed would tease me when we would facilitate meetings together saying how easily I am conned. We would walk out of a meeting where he would be as direct as Ed could be since I would comment the client was really cooperating where he would just laugh and say from now on you play good cop and I will play bad cop as a strategy. In that way if I you are snowed by the client it will be in line with your nice role

Ed was so good at his craft that he even got judges to assign clients to Ed after Ed testified to verify whether our client should be cleared.

Ed would talk about his declining health but never let his condition interfere with his work. He would travel far to be at my house for our teas or our monthly get togethers at a restaurant so I could provide support. Our specialists had the utmost respect for Ed and all of us wish he had more time on this earth but we know his light is still shining and that his imprint will be in our hearts forever.

I was fortunate enough to have Charles join my business House Calls several years ago. Debbie Marcus recruited him and then recruited Renee Stubbs to be a contractor. We work with teens to seniors facing a variety of acute and/or chronic life transition.

Charles would mentor young men with Aspergers, teach vocational skills to individuals with developmental disabilities, work with hoarders who had so much bizarre clutter that most people would shy away from such work but not Charles. Charles, Debbie and our Recovery Coach worked with a man who not only had chronic mental illness but an alcohol addiction. He would drive this man to his psychiatrist, take him to doctors, meetings, grocery shop and discuss historical and political topics along the way. Even though Charles was a Recreation Therapist, no job was off limits to him and each client felt so cared about.

Most recently he was working with a woman who jumped in front of a train three times and had a series of physical and mental problems but Charles took her to the library, the recreation center, walked with her to get ice cream and buoyed her up with his upbeat philosophy and personal stories of Dennis's determination.

Charles and I have know each other for years personally and professionally, however working with him directly enlightened me as to why everyone respected, loved and wanted to be with Charles. He was a man of integrity, generous to others despite his physical decline, loyal to me and my business by marketing House Calls at association meetings and always sustaining our positive image. My business will not be the same without Charles but I know our clients have benefited from knowing him. I personally feel blessed to have had the opportunity to share so much time with him over these years.
